Bankside Hotel, in partnership with Contemporary Collective, is delighted to welcome artist Imogen Morris back to the Art Yard Makers Studio for her second Artist in Residence programme.
For this residency, Imogen will draw inspiration from the rich cultural landscape that surrounds Bankside. Home to some of London’s most recognisable landmarks, the neighbourhood provides the perfect backdrop for a new body of work celebrating the architecture, creativity and character of the South Bank.
Using her distinctive nail and thread technique, Imogen will recreate a series of iconic buildings that many of our guests discover during their stay. From St Paul’s Cathedral and Big Ben to the OXO Tower and beyond, each piece will transform familiar landmarks into intricate contemporary artworks, revealing new perspectives through texture, geometry and light.
About Imogen Morris
Imogen Morris is a contemporary artist whose intricate thread works explore portraiture and architecture through an innovative hand-crafted process. After graduating with a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art and Art History from Kingston University, she spent several years working within the community arts and voluntary sector before returning to her own artistic practice.
Inspired by traditional embroidery, Imogen has developed a contemporary technique that combines carefully positioned nails with layers of hand-wrapped thread. Mapping the contours of each subject, the threads gradually build into delicate networks of geometric forms that create remarkable depth, texture and detail.
Balancing strength with fragility, her work transforms simple materials into striking compositions that capture both the physical presence and unique character of her subjects. Through this meticulous process, London’s iconic architecture is reimagined in a beautifully intricate and unexpected way.
