We are excited to announce ‘Summer of Sculpture’, a residency where artists explore the connection between painting and sculpture. This summer, painter Georgi Morrison will join us as our Artist in Residence at the Art Yard Studio, working alongside sculptors Claire Jackson, Johannes Nielsen, and Natanya Barrett, who will showcase their work throughout the residency.

Over the course of three months, Georgi will create new paintings inspired by each sculptor’s work. Each month, a new sculpture will be added to the studio, allowing Georgi to have an ongoing dialogue between her paintings and the sculptures. Her work will maintain her dreamlike style, focusing on the theme ‘Form and Flow’, which explores the balance between precision and movement, drawing inspiration from nature, architecture, and the human figure.

Outside our studio, Gareth Griffiths will curate a Sculpture Garden on our outdoor terrace, turning it into a lively open-air exhibit. He will display seven bold and geometric sculptures that encourage public engagement and exploration, expanding the residency experience beyond the studio. His work contrasts with the surrounding landscape, inviting moments of reflection and interaction in unexpected places.

We will also host workshops, open studio days, and events that allow the public to connect with the artists. These activities allow hotel guests and local community members to engage with the residency’s themes, observe the creative process, and participate in meaningful artistic discussions.

Georgi will keep an open studio for visitors to see her work in progress and discuss her evolving art. You can also follow her journey on Contemporary Collective’s Instagram  where we’ll share behind-the-scenes content from her creative practice and collaborative process.

About the Artists:

Georgia Morrison’s work blends vibrant colours with soft tones, creating dreamlike scenes. Her paintings often explore surreal themes, reflecting her unique perspective on reality.

Johannes Nielsen is a sculptor from Beijing. He studied at Lunds Art School and has worked in Europe and Asia. His art reflects his fascination with the boundary between physical reality and inner perception.

Claire Jackson uses unconventional materials to create her sculptures, which mix science and nature. Her white, organic forms highlight the beauty of nature while celebrating scientific creativity.

Natanya Barrett focuses on the female body in her work, merging virtual elements with sculptures. She challenges stereotypes around gender, race, and culture, particularly within Afroculturalism, to promote positive narratives about the Black body.

Gareth Griffiths creates colourful steel sculptures inspired by Googie architecture, a bold American style. His sculptures make industrial materials into dynamic art that invites playful interactions with space.
