Dragon Babies - Gamelan (Javanese orchestra) workshops

Wed, 30 Jan - Thu, 28 Feb
Royal Festival Hall
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, Lambeth, London SE1 8XX
In 1987, Southbank Centre was privileged to receive a beautiful Javanese percussion orchestra called a gamelan from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, and this experience gives you and your family a chance to play it.

Bring your family and friends to play our Javanese gamelan percussion orchestra. Regarded as one instrument but played by many people, the gamelan comprises gongs, metallophones and drums and generates rich, sonorous and mesmerising sounds.

Playing the gamelan is more than just playing an instrument. It’s a fun social experience, inspiring self-confidence, improving coordination, sharpening listening skills and encouraging interaction and team-building.

You don’t need previous musical experience is necessary, just a willingness to sit on the floor, take off your shoes and have fun.

Your music teacher will beDr Sophie Ransby, who began studying the gamelan in 1989 taking classes in Bradford-on-Avon and at the Royal Festival Hall, London. After completing a music degree and MA in composition, Sophie  now manages the gamelan programme and its associated activities.
